Metanarrative

Meta (Greek) - beyond, transcending, more comprehensive.

Narrative (Latin, English) - a story; characterized by the telling of a story.

A meta-narrative is a more comprehensive idea, the thing that is behind, or beyond the literal narrative, a story common to all (cultural, social). It is a narrative about a story, history or action(s) which offers a legitimate explanation through the anticipated completion of a (as yet unrealized) master idea.
